Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5
This beatitude is especially interesting when you learn what it means to be "meek." In the English language "meekness" is a vague and wimpy word, but in the original Greek it means much more.
Meekness is power under constraint. Intensity with self-control. Somewhat like a wild horse that has been tamed with bridle and bit: the horse is still very powerful but it has learned to control its power and be guided by its master.
With that in mind, consider now who Jesus was; Almighty God clothed in human flesh. He was capable of unbelievable power, which he demonstrated through countless miracles and healings. Jesus even raised three people from the dead.
And, when Christ died on the cross, he had all the same power he ever did. Jesus proved it when the soldiers fell down in the Garden of Gethsemane and were unable to touch him. Jesus proved it again when he healed the servant's ear after Peter cut it off. Christ quickly sorted out the situation in the Garden, so all his disciples were able to escape. The soldiers were left with Jesus alone, even though they had come to take them all. Christ was MASTER of everything that happened as he was arrested.
Jesus Christ was never a victim! Through the whole ordeal of the cross he stayed meek and silent, allowing the brutality. As excruciating as his death was, Jesus stayed on course because he was determined to fulfill everything that the Father had asked him to do.
This is an almost incomprehensible example of unlimited power under intense control. How can we ever apply it to ourselves? The important thing to learn is that Christ was willing to do whatever the Father wanted. To go wherever his Father wanted him to go. What was it that Christ prayed? "Not my will, but Thine be done." Surely those words hold the key to it all.
In this Beatitude, God promises a very great reward for those who are willing to be Meek.
